World Cup 2026 Group Predictions — Who Advances from Each Group?

Predictions for all 12 World Cup 2026 groups. Which teams advance, who gets eliminated, and the biggest group stage surprises.

Published: Updated:

The 2026 World Cup introduces a new group stage format: 48 teams divided into 12 groups of 4. Each team plays 3 matches, with the top 2 from each group advancing to the Round of 32 alongside the 8 best third-placed teams. This means 32 of 48 teams advance — two-thirds of the field — making early elimination rare but not impossible. Here are our predictions for every group.

Format Explained

Before diving into predictions, the key format details:

  • 12 groups of 4 teams each (Groups A through L)
  • 3 matches per team in the group stage
  • Top 2 from each group advance automatically (24 teams)
  • 8 best third-placed teams also advance (32 total)
  • Only 16 teams are eliminated in the group stage

This format is far more forgiving than the 32-team World Cup. A team can lose one match and still comfortably advance. Even finishing third with 3–4 points is likely enough to qualify as one of the best third-placed teams.

Groups A–D Predictions

Group A: Mexico, TBD, TBD, TBD Mexico opens the tournament on home soil at Estadio Azteca. The energy of the opening match and altitude advantage gives Mexico a strong start. Prediction: Mexico tops the group. The second-strongest team advances in second.

Group B: Depending on the draw, this group could feature a strong European or South American seed alongside teams from Asia and Africa. Prediction: The top seed advances first, with the second qualification spot going to whichever team handles the pressure of the expanded format best.

Group C: The new format means groups with one clear favorite and three competitive mid-tier teams. Upsets are more likely in these balanced groups. Prediction: Expect at least one surprise result where an underdog beats a higher-ranked team.

Group D: USA, Paraguay, Australia, UEFA Playoff C This is the most scrutinized group for American fans. The USMNT is the clear favorite, with home advantage amplifying their quality. Paraguay and Australia are competitive but beatable, and the UEFA playoff winner will be a dangerous but not insurmountable opponent. Prediction: USA wins the group with 7–9 points. Australia or Paraguay takes second. All three non-USA teams could potentially advance as best third-placed teams.

Groups E–H Predictions

Group E: If a South American giant like Brazil or Argentina is seeded here, they should cruise through. The expanded format reduces the risk of a shock elimination for true elite teams. Prediction: The top seed advances with 9 points (three wins).

Group F: European depth means groups with a European top seed and a dangerous second pot team from Africa or Asia. Prediction: The European seed and an African team advance.

Group G: This could be the “Group of Death” if the draw places two strong teams from different confederations together. Prediction: Two teams advance with 6 points each after splitting their head-to-head match.

Group H: Asian football has been rising rapidly — Japan, South Korea, and Saudi Arabia are all capable of topping a group. Prediction: If an Asian team is seeded here, they advance as group winners.

Groups I–L Predictions

Group I: The final four groups will likely feature some of the tightest battles. Teams from CONCACAF (beyond USA and Mexico) like Canada and Costa Rica could feature here. Prediction: A European favorite and a CONCACAF team advance.

Group J: African teams have historically been strong in the group stage, with Ghana, Cameroon, Nigeria, and Senegal all capable of impressive results. Prediction: An African team finishes in the top two.

Group K: With 48 teams, some groups will feature teams making their World Cup debut or returning after long absences. These teams are unpredictable — sometimes brilliant, sometimes overwhelmed. Prediction: At least one debutant exceeds expectations.

Group L: The final group will complete the picture. Prediction: Two experienced teams advance, with the third-placed team also making the Round of 32 as one of the best third-placed sides.

Predicted Third-Place Qualifiers

The 8 best third-placed teams advance. Historically (from the 1986–1994 format that used best third-placed teams), 4 points is almost always enough, and 3 points with a good goal difference can also qualify.

Our prediction for the third-place cutoff: 3 points with a goal difference of 0 or better will be sufficient to advance. Teams with 4 points as third-placed finishers are virtually guaranteed to qualify.

This means that in many groups, even the third-placed team goes through. The real pressure is on fourth-placed teams who finish with 0–1 points — those are the ones going home early.

Group of Death

Every World Cup has a “Group of Death” where multiple strong teams are drawn together, guaranteeing that a good team goes home early. In a 48-team format with 12 groups, the probability of extreme difficulty groups is actually lower (more groups to spread talent), but it can still happen.

A true Group of Death would feature two Pot 1 or Pot 2 caliber teams in the same group. If, for example, a group contains:

  • A strong European team (Germany, Netherlands, or Portugal)
  • A strong South American team (Colombia or Uruguay)
  • A competitive African side (Morocco or Nigeria)
  • A solid Asian team (Japan or South Korea)

…then that group produces genuine drama. Our prediction: at least one group will see a team ranked in the FIFA top 15 eliminated in the group stage.

The expanded group stage is designed to be more inclusive, but it also creates more matches, more variables, and more opportunities for the unexpected. The drama begins on June 11 at Estadio Azteca and does not let up until the last group match on June 28.
